Meet the Characters from A Home for My Heart

Since we’re at just over 2 weeks from the official release of A Home for My Heart, I thought you’d like to meet some of the characters–at least the ones I found in pictures. (I wish I could find pictures of all my characters, but for me, a photo I see as my character is almost always from the time period–and often even the general geographical location–and has to whispers that’s her (or him)! the moment I see it. Maybe after you read the book, you can send me a picture you think represents one of those other characters!)

SADIE

A Home for My Heart is Sadie’s story, told from her point of view. When the book opens, she is assistant to the matron of the Raystown Home for Orphan and Friendless Children. But Sadie is unique in that she does’t just work there–she once lived there! Sadie to loving and kind but she wants to prove herself, too. Show that her life is worth something. That it was worth saving. She has a strong desire to “save” those in her care, too. To meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Like all of us, Sadie’s desire to right sometimes gets in the way of her faith.

HAZEL

When A Home for My Heart opens, Hazel is the matron. She has been a long time friend and mentor for Sadie. Hazel had been a student at the nearby college, preparing for the mission field when a professor asked her to consider staying there and being a missionary to children. She put of any thoughts of a life of her own for many years. Her character’s situation is based on one of the real-life matrons of the Huntingdon Home for Orphan and Friendless Children.

BLAINE

Blaine is a farmer, seeking to own his own land. He and Sadie have long known and loved one another. He, too, was once lived at the Home. Blaine loves the kids at the home and often gives of himself, his time, and the produce of the farm he leases for their welfare. He is slow of speech and large of stature. He is a man whose love and loyalty go deep.

EARL

found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pahuntin/

found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pahuntin/

Earl comes to the Home as a consultant. He’s from Philadelphia, holds a master’s degree in social work, and longs to be part of the new Children’s Bureau forming in Washington D.C. He is dashing and sophisticated and knowledgeable about the current trends in the care of orphan and indigent children.

Of course there are other characters, like Miranda and Mrs. Fore, who help keep the Home running. And a passel of children with various situations and needs. I hope you’ll dive into the pages of A Home for My Heart and meet them all!

  1. Seeing the old photos gives a different layer to this wonderful story! I agree – would like to look in their eyes and see the story. Cheering with you as you count the days until launch day!!!

    • Thank you, Carla! Look for my pin with your sweet endorsement to be posted in the next few weeks! 🙂

    • I love old photos. I look into their eyes and wonder about the lives they really lived. And since I can’t always know that, it is so fun to imagine them!
